Oglethorpe University is a private liberal arts college in Atlanta, which is the most populous city and the capital of the US state of Georgia, with a population of approximately 541 000 inhabitants, at the time of the 2009 census. With more than 5.4 million people, living within its limits, its metropolitan area is the 9th largest in the country. Atlanta is also the county seat of Fulton County and the seat government of the State of Georgia.
Oglethorpe University was established in 1835 and was named after James Edward Oglethorpe, the state's founder. At the time when it was built, the university was governed by the Presbyterian Church, fact which makes it one of the South's earliest denominational institutions.
Oglethorpe closed its doors to students, between 1862 and 1866, due to the American Civil War, and again, in 1872, due to financial difficulties. It was re-chartered as a non-denominational institution in 1913, and 2 years later, the cornerstone to the new campus was laid at its present location on Peachtree Road in Atlanta.
Oglethorpe's athletic teams, which have Stormy Petrel, as their mascot, compete in 14 sports, for both men and women, in NCAA Division III. Their most successful team is the men's golf team, perennially among the nation's best.
Among Oglethrope's noteworthy alumni, there are: Luke Appling - member of the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame, Jocelyn Baker - Director of Communications for MARTA, Jazz musician John G. Blowers, Jr. - former drummer for Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, and the Harlem Blues & Jazz Band, Vincent Sherman - acclaimed Hollywood film director with more than 30 movies to his credit, including Mr. Skeffington (1944) and The Young Philadelphians (1959), and Charles Longstreet Weltner - former U.S. representative, Georgia Supreme Court Justice and recipient of the Profiles in Courage Award.
